Céline Sciamma’s 2019 film Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a true modern classic in all senses, but especially sits as a benchmark for queer and feminist cinema. Set in France in the late 18th century, the film tells the story of a forbidden affair between an aristocrat and a painter commissioned to paint her portrait. Winner of 44 international awards and recipient of 125 nominations, the film is the current high-point of Sciamma’s already glittering career.
