Welcome to the third and final online screening of the freshers cinema! If you encounter any bugs, please report them ASAP through our email, uclfilmsociety@gmail.com.
Discussion will follow each film over zoom, a great space for discussing your ideas and passion. Alternatively, treat the discussion like a podcast and just sit back to listen to other students’ thoughts. These events will be an opportunity to relax, reflect, meet new people, and get involved with one of the many exciting societies that the university has to offer.
Spirited Away is arguably Studio Ghibli’s greatest achievement and is by a considerable margin the highest grossing film produced by the company. In characteristic style of Hayao Miyazaki, the film has a strong focus on fantasy, bravery and childhood. It follows the ten-year-old Chihiro Ogino (Rumi Hiiragi), who accidentally finds her way into the spirit world and faces a host of tribulations and obstacles in her fight to survive, most notably the need to save her parents after they are turned into pigs by the witch Yubaba. Spirited Away was released in 2001 and has been an especially seminal story for the generation of children born around this time. We hope that through a degree of personal relation and the beauty of Studio Ghibli animation, this will be a soothing film for a lot of students and a relaxing way to finish the first week of the 2020/21 academic year.
