VARSITY BROADCAST CREW CALL
We’re excited to announce the crew call for the biggest scale FilmSoc production of the year!
Broadcast is a huge part of the film and TV industry, and this is your chance to get to grips with camera operation, sound recording, presenting, and several other technicalities of a livestream. We will carry out training sessions with the selected crew beforehand for certain roles (noted below) - so don’t worry if you don’t have experience yet!
We’re looking to put together an extensive crew for the VARSITY BROADCAST 2023. Below are the roles listed, separated into two different units.
Camera operators:
4 camera operators per day, for the 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th of March. No experience needed! Just include a short statement about why you’d be a good fit for the role, and any past experience if you do happen to have it. Apply here: https://forms.gle/MbCjdiEnqQqEK67F9.
Presenter and pitch-side crew:

Role Descriptions:
Head of sound:
The head of sound will be working with the producers in gathering the technology used for the Varsity broadcast and be the head of sound operations for either on-pitch commentary or in-studio commentary. This will include setting up the sound for the commentators/presenters and mixing the sound for a live broadcast. Technical experience with audio is required!
Sound assistant:
Sound assistants will work with the head of sound in setting up the microphones, recording and mixing equipment, and ensuring all sound during the broadcast runs smoothly.
DoP:
The DoP will be in charge of the lighting setup for the studio commentary, working closely with the director and production designer to create a professional studio for the presenter segments of the live broadcast.
Gaffer:
The gaffer will work closely with the DoP to set-up and maintain the desired lighting for the studio. We also require a gaffer to work on-pitch for interviews, potentially using handheld lights or reflectors to improve lighting situations.
Assistant Camera:
The camera assistant will work on the in-studio cameras for the presenting segment of the broadcast.
Production Designer:
The production designer will work closely with the director and DoP to create a studio style room set-up for the presenting segment of the broadcast - think ‘Match of The Day’.
Role-specific portfolio tips:
Head of sound:
Previous technical audio experience is essential. Broad knowledge of different sound tech specifically for commentary style sound recording
DoP:
Previous experience with studio lighting set-ups and previous experience linked to lighting and livestream if applicable.
Gaffer:
Some previous experience in lighting and studio work, although not required.
Assistant Camera:
Previous work with camera operating, with reference to which camera’s you have worked with before/prefer working with
Production Designer:
Indication of what type of studio setup you would like to produce. past experience in studio-style designing.
You can indicate your availability for as many or as few of the days you prefer - this is on both application forms.
Transport will be provided from the FilmSoc studio, and food costs will be reimbursed (snacks will be provided).
