Agnès Varda’s 1962 film is a classic of French Left Bank Cinema. The story follows Cléo (Corinne Marchand), a successful pop singer, in the hours from 5:00pm until 6:30pm on June the 21st as she waits for the results of a test that may diagnose her with cancer. Cléo rehearses, goes hat shopping and meets a soldier among other things in this almost real-time drama. The beauty of her Parisian lifestyle often gives way to more profound ideas of mortality that bubble under the surface of the film, giving a rare example of an insightful character study into a female protagonist for a film of the period.
