Hello!
Since some of our members asked a few days ago, when we had the Zoom welcome meeting, what platforms they could access as UCL students, I thought it’d be nice to collect them all under this thread.
CLIE Self Access Centre
First of all, there’s the CLIE Self Access Centre: https://resources.clie.ucl.ac.uk/home/sac
It’s very useful for foreign films, as it’s meant to be used by language students. The quality of the films is not the best, and normally they are sourced from DVD, VHS or TV rips, but it’s free and it works. You just need to log in with your UCL ID.
Kanopy
Then there’s Kanopy, which is quite a weird website. You can find Hitchcock films mixed with Ivan the Terrible Part II and free courses about the economy, a very strange catalogue indeed. https://ucl.kanopy.com
You need to create an account for this website, but it’ll link with your UCL ID.
MUBI (more or less)
As we explained during the call, MUBI used to be free for all students. In my case, it still is, but I’m not sure if new accounts can also access the full catalogue of films. It used to be such a good website! https://mubi.com/showing
This platform has really interesting cinema, both old and new, with a very nice mix of international films. Out of all the student film streaming services, this one has the best picture quality, and the catalogue is mostly comprised of remastered films (no VHS rips like in the CLIE SAC). If you’re not able to get the student account, a subscription to this site is worth it.
BFI Player?
You don’t get this website as a UCL student, but it’s such a good platform that I wanted to include it anyway. https://player.bfi.org.uk/subscription
It’s got a brilliant collection, all with great picture quality.
I think these are all the services we more or less get as UCL students, but if I’ve forgotten any other site, just attach it below. Hope you find these useful!
