Hi Tomi! This sounds like an exciting project, and I am also in need of Northern film recs, so I will keep an eye out on this forum!
I remember as a kid absolutely loving Billy Elliot. That said, my absolute favourite Northern film is probably The Full Monty which, whilst not set in the North East (it’s set in Sheffield), has this amazing Northern sensibility which is tender and sensitive, whilst also being brash and confident, and I just love it!
As a Mancunian, I have a penchant for Hobson’s Choice and Spike Island. Also, whilst I haven’t seen the whole of Brassed Off (which is set in Yorkshire), I have seen the part where the negotiations surrounding the mill closures are set to Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, and it gets me every time!
Apologies for not having many North East recs in particular, but I hope these help/you at least enjoy them, and good luck!
