Welcome to the first of the Film and TV Society’s regular Thursday screenings for the 2020/21 academic year! Discussion will follow each film over zoom, a great space for discussing your ideas. Alternatively, treat the discussion like a podcast and just sit back to listen to other students’ thoughts.
Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) is a truly groundbreaking work of art. Famously panned by critics upon its release, the film has grown from being a cult classic to one of the most widely praised and influential movies of all time. A deeply philosophical musing on evolution, civilisation and technology, 2001 has stood the test of time and transcended its contextual roots in the Cold War space race. The special effects are impressive even by today’s standards, and of all Stanley Kubrick’s works this film best exemplifies his famous quote - “If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed.”
