Fritz Lang’s 1927 film Metropolis is widely considered to be one of the most influential works in the history of cinema. Arguably the crown jewel of German expressionism, it uses stunning early special effects to achieve a highly stylised aesthetic of a futurist city. The city is separated between the privileged utopia of the higher levels and the grubby toil of the workers below. When the privileged youth Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) discovers the grim scene under the city, he becomes intent on helping the workers.
