The first of the films in Steve McQueen’s massively acclaimed Small Axe anthology series, Mangrove is a dramatisation of the 1971 trial of The Mangrove Nine that viscerally captures the violence of the events and methodically deconstructs the racism upholding British institutions. It, like the rest of the series, is a powerful work to be looked at in reference to the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, and UCL Film Society is pleased to be creating a platform for viewers to do so alongside the UCL Guild. Discussion will follow each film over zoom, a great space for discussing your ideas. Alternatively, treat the discussion like a podcast and just sit back to listen to other students’ thoughts.
