The first of the films in Steve McQueen’s massively acclaimed Small Axe anthology series, Mangrove is a dramatisation of the 1971 trial of The Mangrove Nine that viscerally captures the violence of the events and methodically deconstructs the racism upholding British institutions. It, like the rest of the series, is a powerful work to be looked at in reference to the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, and UCL Film Society is pleased to be creating a platform for viewers to do so alongside the UCL Guild. Discussion will follow each film over zoom, a great space for discussing your ideas. Alternatively, treat the discussion like a podcast and just sit back to listen to other students’ thoughts.
Below is a link to donate to Blueprint For All (formerly known as The Stephen Lawrence Trust). It’s an exceptional charity. - “We work with young people and communities to create an inclusive society in which everyone, regardless of their race, ethnicity or background are provided with tangible opportunities to thrive, whilst driving systemic change in organisations and society.”
