Her (2013), dir. Spike Jonze

Spike Jonze’s Her is a subtle and deeply touching story of love and loneliness. In a not-too-distant-future Los Angeles, the introverted Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) grapples with the aftermath of his broken marriage and begins to find solace in the unexpected form of his virtual assistant - an artificial intelligence who names herself Samantha (Scarlett Johansson). As their relationship blossoms, both are faced by the problematic implications of loving through such a dynamic. The film features incredible performances from both of its leading actors, an Oscar-winning screenplay and one of the most interesting and original takes on the aesthetic of the future’s cities in recent film history. We are confident in the hope that this film will be a catalyst for some very thoughtful conversation regarding technology and its impact on the most human of experiences.
